Conclusion: GSPs are a favourite dog of Australian deer hunters in particular, and well liked by hunters in general. Their phenomenal eyesight, great sense of smell and overall "bush smarts" make them a great companion in the Australian bush. They and the Hungarian Vizsla are two of the most common Utility dogs used by hunters in the Southern States of Australia.

Not only are they a good hunting companion however. The breed has a great overall personality, and makes an excellent, child-friendly dog in the family situation. As mentioned, their short coat needs little grooming, which is a bonus in most households! Additionally many owners who do hunt with them or spend a lot of time in the bush appreciate the short coat, as it makes it a lot easier to find the all too common bush & Kangaroo ticks that are found in the Australian scrub.

As the breed is so popular, there are quite a few breeders in Australia. We have some breeders listed below, but you can also contact organisations such as breed associations and State Canine Councils (eg Dogs Vic, etc) for links to additional breeders.

Interestingly, it is rare to find pure or cross breed individuals of this breed to be found in shelters for re-homing. This is a great testament to the overall beautiful nature of this working and family dog, especially given the quite large numbers that are to be found across Australia.
